The 6 speed overheats on the track if you drive it hard. Mine lasted 22 min before overheat last Friday. It was only 42 degrees in the first morning session. After letting the car cool for 30 min, it would overheat after 15 min. The car would reduce the redline to 5500 rpm.

And/or buzzing noise from the pump vanes that are proportional to engine rpm. Fudman, since it sort of failed in its winter sleep, you may want to try the bleed procedure.

The E60-generation M5 being the most heavily criticized. Sure, the fact that the S85 engine under the hood of the E60 M5 model didn’t help, being know for having various issues that could leave

If I were you, watch m539 restorations videos on YouTube when he restored a e60 m5 that was in worse condition than yours. It is both entertaining and educational because he highlights and repairs the common failures that these cars have and does a lot of preventative maintenance.

However, I would like this groups opinion on my specific problem. My 9/06 build E60 has significant engine noise/vibration during cold start and low idle. Definitely does not sound like a $94,000 car.

Every common/known issue that can go wrong on the E60 m5. went wrong on mine. LOL @Garfunkgrin - Here it goes! LOL. Again YMMV. I may be representative of the extreme side of ownership of stuff to break/fail.-VANOS line/pump (more common in pre engine-update but mine was a 2008 LCI)-Oil cooler (weak neck broke, a new OEM was installed)

There are two kinds of Vanos noise. The first kind is loud rattle only heard at startup and stops within a minute. This is fixed by installing the Vanos oil pressure accumulator. The second kind is loud rattle (like an old Mercedes diesel) that gets worse the warmer the engine is. So, we’ve finally gotten behind the wheel of the new sixth-generation, all-wheel drive M5. It has 592bhp – four times the power of the entry-level Five and a 0-62mph sprint time of 3.4 seconds

SMG transmission problems. I didn't see this specific issue addressed elsewhere so here goes: When shifting into 1st gear (from neutral, reverse or 2nd) there were two issues. One, there was a loud "clanking" sound, so much so that I looked to make sure there was something rattling around loose in the trunk. Two, there was a significant delay
